When a friend of mine got a job in marketing a few months back, she asked me to explain Twitter to her. She asked me what hashtags were and wanted to know which hashtags to use and when. Even though I used hashtags regularly, explaining the concept was a different story. What I told her was this – hashtags are used to emphasize an important keyword or phrase that is relevant to the post that you’re posting. You use hashtags so that your post can be tagged for that topic which increases its chances of being found. Hashtags can be a place, a name; they can be one word or a phrase (although not too long); or they can be funny or factual. Basically, anything you you want.
While hashtags are helpful – both for search or to summarize a point, one thing is for sure. Don’t #spam your #posts with #hashtags. Here’s why (and enjoy :D):
